In the United States alone, lightning is responsible for an estimated 100 deaths per year. That is more than hurricanes, tornadoes or earthquakes on average, so it is not something to take lightly.

What should you do?

If a storm begins, take shelter in a solid building if at all possible.

A car with a hard top would also be better than being out in the weather or near an isolated tree or pole. Stop using and unplug your electrical items, including land line phones. Don’t stand near windows.

Curiosity is a powerful impulse but one that could get you killed.
