Many people leave our homes for a trip for a few days or a few weeks or months without thinking about it.
However, your home is just sitting there and may become a target for break-ins or vandalism.
It’s a good idea to take a few precautions before you leave. You can let your neighbors know so that they will be aware that you are not there and will be able to keep an eye on it.
It’s also a good idea to let the police know in your community if you will be away for an extended period of time.
Many people like to use timers for lights and a radio or television so that there will appear to be activity in your home.
Of course, a monitored security and fire system is always a good idea regardless of how long you are away. There are also self-monitored security systems which you can keep track of through a cell phone or laptop computer.
If you are traveling in the cold months, make sure that you have a way to monitor the heat in your home. Should it fail, while you are gone, the consequences could be severe with broken water pipes and the subsequent leakage into your home.
